The Position of Police Officer Requires:
- Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
- The applicant must
- Be 21 years of age upon graduation from the Police Academy.
- Be a citizen of the United States.
- Meet various physical requirements.
- The applicant must have vision that is correctable to 20/20 in each eye.
- Every applicant being considered for this position must participate in a
- Complete background investigation.
- Oral interview.
- Truth Verification Examination (via Polygraph and/or Voice Stress Analysis).
- Physical/psychological examination.

- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

About Us
The University of Maryland Department of Public Safety is a full-service, legislated police agency that serves the myriad needs of the students, faculty, staff, and visitors within its jurisdiction. Each of its approximately 100 sworn officers is empowered by the state to make arrests, investigate crimes, and carry firearms. Additionally, a cooperative written agreement exists with the Prince George’s County Police to assist with police services in the City of College Park, the second largest city in Prince George’s County.
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies has accredited the University of Maryland Department of Public Safety following an in-depth examination of the agency’s administration and operation. Some of the Police Services that we provide:
- Emergency response to crimes in progress and to life threatening incidents
- Patrol in marked and unmarked vehicles, on foot,bicycle, and motorcycle
- Investigation of crimes and criminal activity
- Enforcement of motor vehicle laws and traffic accident investigation
- Special Event security (sporting events, concerts, social events, etc.)
- Coordination of security services provided by the 125 members of the Police Auxiliary Services Unit
